Blue Jackets Sign D Mathieu Roy

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Mathieu Roy to a one-year, two-way NHL contract, GM Scott Howson announced today. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. It will be the second two-way contract that they have given out this week. They hope Roy can develop into a scoring threat from the blue line. He could end up becoming an enforcer, since his play in the minors projects him out to be an aggressive player.
Roy spent his five-year professional career in the Edmonton Oilers organization, tallying two goals and one assist for three points with 57 penalty minutes in 30 career NHL games. He has also registered 16 goals, 75 assists, 91 points and 390 penalty minutes in 241 career AHL games with Toronto, Edmonton, Hamilton and Springfield. With Edmonton, he set a career-high for penalty minutes in a game (21) at Columbus on Feb. 22, 2007.
He had his best AHL season in 2004-05 when he notched 3 goals, 22 assists, 25 points and 68 penalty minutes in 51 games with the Edmonton Roadrunners.
Roy was selected with the Oilers’ 10th pick, 215th overall, in the 2003 Entry Draft. He played four seasons with Val-d’Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
If Columbus doesn’t acquire Sergei Zubov or trade San Jose for a defenseman, Roy could see limited time in the NHL. He has shown the ability to score goals in the past, I hope he can develop further and be a great addition to the depth of the blue line defense. At the very least, I hope to see some great fights from him.
